2.5 Lunchbreaks
Last weekend as Emma and I drove home, we turned into our street and noticed a stranger in our neighbourhood. Right in the middle of the road was a turtle, who Emma would go on to aptly name, “Roadio”.
I stopped the car (halting traffic from both directions) as Emma and I went to check on the little guy. He was a long way from the creek that runs near our house and there was nothing in the direction he was heading except concrete, shops, and houses. I was surprised the little fella had not been squashed already or taken as a meal by a bird or other animal.
The little creek he came from was running dry and we guessed for that reason (or another) he had decided it was time to go exploring to find a new home. As it was getting dark, we offered him accommodation at our house, which he graciously accepted. Emma kept him company, talked to him and checked on him often during his overnight stay.
The next morning, after much Google research on turtles, we decided he was a Brisbane River Turtle – our best guess. From his size, we estimated he was around 15 years old. We then found a turtle friendly river nearby (one that never runs dry) and set little Roadio free! 🙂
We made a short video … if you wait until the end you will see Emma saying farewell to Roadio as he swims off to find a new home. Super cute!

Glad you liked it!
He kept us busy, but was nice having him visit for the weekend.
Oh … and we are only assuming a ‘him’.

Yes, it is cute. What a delightful child Emma is! And Roadio is the friendliest turtle I ever saw. He’s always out of his shell looking around. Curiosity almost did him in, however. I like his new home. I think he will be very happy there. 🙂

Thank you. She is a delightful child 🙂
And as for Roadio … well he was pretty feisty when I first grabbed him and not impressed with the car ride to our house. But he seemed (after only 1 day) to get use to the idea of being held and really enjoyed the car trip to his new home. The river flows through where we set him free and opens out into a deeper area with plenty of water lilies and wildlife – he will be happy I am sure.

By the way, the sketch is very flattering to Roadio. I like it very much.

Thanks George. I was happy with Roadio, but not completely happy with my thumb and how it sat on his shell. Wanted to give the impression of holding hands with him. But hey … good enough for telling our tale 😉

LS – holding him delicately round his shell like that you have captured the feeling of giving the little fella a chance and setting him on his way … he had such a cute knowing face in your video clip .
Little Miss Emma looked like she so enjoyed seeing Roadio on his way like a dart through the water off for new adventures … a wonderful moment all round 🙂

Thanks Poppy. He really did seem happy and relaxed when we drove him to his new neighbourhood – a knowing of sorts maybe.
Miss Emma was quite sad to see him go (some tears on the way home), even though she knew it was for the best. I must admit we all got quite attached to the little chap during his short stay 🙂

haha, I knew Roadio got to mean something!
‘Glad his little crossing-the-road adventure didn’t end up in blood and broken shell.
I think it’s pretty brave and kind of Emma to let go of him, what a sweet child.
Cant help but smile with the teenage mutant ninja turle theme 🙂

Thanks Aian.
Well, he was heading in the direction of a French Patisserie, so we thought of the TMNT’s.
I’m biased, but yes, Emma is a sweet child! 🙂

Thank Emma for being such a strong and wise young lady to find a new home and release the turtle. I’m sure Roadio would say the same were he given a voice to do so. 🙂
