BURMA
1988 – The National League for Democracy (NLD) was formed, with Aung San Suu Kyi as general secretary.
1989 – July, placed under house arrest. Offered freedom if she left the country, but she refused.
1990  Election held: NLD received 59% of the votes & 80% of the parliament seats … Results were nullified, and the military refused to hand over power.
